Distance and homelessness didn’t stop Aleta Neilson from pursuing her education. When life threw curveballs, Neilson hit back hard. The altruistic scholar who feels strongly about gender equality and racial equity earned her A.A. degree with a 4.0 GPA while living in a car. That same determination and strength of character drove her to continue her education with FIU Online to study sociology and anthropology when life turned upside down. Neilson endured a physical injury that subsequently ended her nursing career. This was just the beginning of her new life with FIU Online.

While living in North Florida, she flourished as an online student and serves on the leadership committee for the Peace Corps Prep program. With the Academy of Leaders program under her belt, she’s on track to become FIU Online’s first Global Learning Medallion recipient.
Read Neilson’s full story on FIU’s Global Learning site to learn how you too can take advantage of the many leadership programs and organizations that FIU Online students can experience, even when miles away from campus. Read the full story here.
